This post proposes a new bibliographic metric for academics, defined as follows: The 1000-index is the number of papers cited at least a thousand times.
Google has invented the expression "i10-index" (the number of publications with at least 10 citations). In Google's terms, the 1000-index is the i1000-index (this notation has been used by Peter Sheridan Dodds).
I use Google Scholar as citation database to compute it.

Properties
Compared to the other citation analysis and bibliometrics (such as the well known H-index), the 1000-index has the following characteristics:- it is very select: only few academics have a non-zero 1000-index, even fewer have a 1000-index greater than 1.
- it measures real impact: with 1000 citations, the noise level is necessarily low. The paper's impact goes beyond self-citations, random citations, and community-limited impact.
- it gives a good place to books. Writing books is the historical means for structuring a field of knowledge. When this happens they do gather a lot of citations, much more than research articles. In other terms, it is a good idea to write books to enter the 1000-index circle.
- as of a 1000-index of 2, there is no chance involved, the researcher really takes part to outstanding research.
